Wedding gift idea needed
I'm posting this question for the backwards edition of Works for Me Wednesday - its the best way I can think of to ask for mass advice.
I need advice about a wedding gift, and if you know me at all in real life, you know that the very fact that I'm asking for advice and that I only have a week to figure this out is proof that I don't know what to do. Normally I buy gifts way ahead of time - I bought my mom's Mother's Day gift a month ago.
Anyway, one week from today, I leave for Orlando to attend my cousin's wedding. I've known her my whole life, but don't know her that well, and know next to nothing about her personal tastes, at least when it comes to things like decorating her house and whether or not she likes to cook. I do know that she and her fiance just bought a house.
I hate giving gift cards, because they seem so impersonal and I don't like advertising the amount of money I spent on a wedding gift. But, if I buy a "real" gift, it needs to be something is relatively small and lightweight, because I need to fly with it.
I've checked her gift registry - its fairly limited, and there's nothing appropriate to travel with in there.
Any ideas?

Hope that helps!
I once gave two little silver photoframes.
ReplyDeleteHe took it with her photo to his work, and she took it with her too.

Have a great day!!!
I have done many many baskets for wedding. I find out what there wedding colors are and just go with a theme. For instance I have some friends getting married this summer and I am making them a homey basket. I made them a monogram letter http://klanteigne.blogspot.com/2008/03/not-quite-finished.html>. I will be placing that with a candle that I will get from my mother in law http://blynndas-candles.com/candleshop/store.cfm>, a few homemade towels (custom made to match there colors yellow and pink), a pillow, and some fun picture frames. I also try to see what is on there gift registry. I just got married last June and I was dissapointed that we did not get some things that we asked for. So I like to put some handmade stuff in the basket. And stuff that they have asked for. I hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteWe get a few games, usually scrabble, boggle, or cranium, depending on the couple. Then we add a few decks of playing cards, maybe Uno. I've been known to throw in some mini dart guns, just for laughs. Then I enclose a card that says, "The couple that plays together stays together." They can't stay in the bedroom ALL the time. :-)
ReplyDeleteI also like the picture frame idea - and you can just buy some when you get down there. Walmart even has some pretty nice looking frames now. You could find some cool photos to put in them so they have something to decorate with.
ReplyDeleteI've often put together a wedding night midnight supper kit. It can range from really nice glassware and plates, to nice plastic stuff that can later be a picnic set, to disposable stuff if they're going straight from the reception to a flight, but I usually try to have cloth napkins and box/basket liner/tablecloth. Have folding chinese food boxes in a couple of sizes, and put together little sandwiches or snacks from the reception, some of the cake, add a bottle of champagne, and mementos from their decor, and give it to them before they leave. Some brides I know have been too nervous/busy to even eat at their receptions, and everyone has really appreciated having a little something to eat together later as man and wife.
ReplyDeleteOops! And a candle - gotta have candlelight. It can be a scented travel candle, to candlesticks and tapers, and a book of matches too.
ReplyDeleteIs there a family recipe that is popular or special within your family? How 'bout purchasing ingredients for that special recipe and then putting them in a nice platter or serving dish?
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog and leaving comments about budgeting. They were very helpful!

Two of my favorite gifts when I got married were a brass door knocker engraved with our last name and a "Joy of Cooking" cookbook, inscribed with well wishes and a list of the giver's favorite recipes. (Joy of Cooking is awesome, because it's not just a cookbook -- it's a reference for EVERY cooking-related question you can imagine. Ten years later, it's the only cookbook I open weekly).
ReplyDeleteI really like the games idea, too.
Someone else asked nearly the same question on WFMW - and they got some great responses, too -- Check it out here.... http://nonniesnotions.blogspot.com/2008/03/wedding-present-help.html
ReplyDeleteOne of the last ideas(on the other blog) was one of my favorites - a bag with picture hanging items, a hammer and a level. These are all things you can run into Home Depot or Lowes and pick up - all you really need to pack is the bag and the tissue paper if you'd like. Then you can just wrap it all up in tissue and put in the bag.
Enjoy the wedding day - they are so much fun! Thanks, too for you comment on my blog.
Have A Great Day!

First off, about your brother what a horrible diet! I do not want Jayden to end up like this. You know, I'd even be happy if he'd eat mac n cheese, but he doesn't. He won't even eat fries. It's like he wants the processed foods (I just started getting him to eat fried chicken fried in olive oil) fruit (I'm so thankful he loves fruit) and he'll eat like chip, crackers and stuff like that, but it's all so limited.
ReplyDeleteNow for your wedding gift. How about a wedding scrapbook w/a wedding scrapbook kit.
Maybe too large to travel with but I've always thought beach towels would be a great wedding gift. They're the kind of thing no one realizes they need until they're on the way out the door to some swimming event. They're also the kind of thing that can give you sticker shock when you go to buy them. :) If you're flying in to Orlando you could probably pick up a couple nice ones there after you fly in.

ReplyDeleteMy sister got married last fall. I found a photographer who takes pictures of the sunrise every morning. They are then matted and can be personalized to say Joe and Sue's Wedding Day or whatever you like. I obviously couldn't bring it to the wedding, but they loved it when they got it! I plan to buy them sunrise photos when they have children.

How about the idea in this website http://aweddinggiftidea.com. Finding a good idea of wedding gifts is quite hard. So, I believe this might be one of the choice!
